PRESENTS:

Finding Inspiration and Workflow Techniques

In The Duncan Anderson Design Department Gallery at California State University, Long Beach

Join concept designer and publisher Scott Robertson as he shares some of his drawing, rendering and design techniques and provides insight into what helps him get inspired to create the vast range of work that he does. Don’t miss out on this chance to get inspired and learn new ways to push your own work further than you thought possible.

Robertson graduated with honors with a B.S. degree in Transportation Design in April 1990. He immediately opened a consulting firm in San Francisco, where he designed a variety of consumer products. He began teaching at Art Center College of Design in 1995, first with a year-and-a-half stint at Art Center Europe in Vevey, Switzerland and then in Pasadena, California.

He has worked on a very wide variety of projects ranging from the Hot Wheels Animated series Battle Force Five to theme park attractions such as Men in Black the Ride in Orlando, Florida. Some of his clients have included the BMW subsidiary DesignworksUSA, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Minority Report feature film, Nike, Universal Studios, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Buena Vista Games, and Fiat to name just a few.

He founded the company Design Studio Press in 2002, a Los Angeles based publishing house. With 43 titles to date Design Studio Press is bringing international attention to the field of concept art. Represented by Ingram Publisher Services in the United States and Canada, all titles reach worldwide distribution through American Wholesale Book Company, Baker & Taylor, and Ingram Book Company. In addition to the above, Born Digital in Japan and Titan Books in the UK have purchased rights for their respective territories. In-house accounts and distributors in Germany, France, Spain, China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines, and Thailand keep the titles well circulated throughout the world.

As a way to further design, drawing and rendering education, Design Studio Press teamed with The Gnomon Workshop to create a library of “how to” DVDs. Robertson himself instructed on nine DVDs, focusing on drawing and rendering techniques for industrial and entertainment designers. He co-produced an additional 41 DVDs with various top artists, designers, and instructors.

Robertson served as Chair of Art Center’s new entertainment design department, which he began in 2006 by writing the curriculum and hiring the faculty to staff it. He continues to work as a design consultant to the entertainment industry, and acts as president of Design Studio Press. He is married to film editor Melissa Kent.
