The Design Accelerator:
Creating design-driven startups

In The Duncan Anderson Design Department Gallery at California State University, Long Beach

The Design Accelerator (TDA) was launched in June, 2013, as a partnership between Art Center College of Design, Caltech, and Idealab. Among Los Angeles’ many incubators and accelerators, TDA is the first one to emphasize the value of design to disrupt markets, and the growing appeal of design to investors in the startup world. Co-founders Erik M. Hovanec and Mark Breitenberg will share the story of TDA’s creation, how it operates, and the plans for its future.

Erik M. Hovanec is the Managing Director of The Design Accelerator. He was the President and CEO of LeisureLink, Inc. until 2012, and served as an executive at Green Dot Corporation and GoTo, among other companies. Hovanec holds an MBA from Harvard.

Dr. Mark Breitenberg is the Special Assistant to the President at Art Center College of Design, where he also served as Dean and department chair. Breitenberg was the Provost at California College of the Arts in San Francisco until 2011. He was also the President of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) until 2011, and the Chair of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design awards jury in 2010. He holds a PhD from the University of California, San Diego, in Literature and Philosophy.
