Using Design to Confront the World

In The Duncan Anderson Design Department Gallery at California State University, Long Beach
6241 East University Drive, Long Beach, CA 90815
Park in the Foundation Lot across from the Design Department main entrance – $5

A design career can be about confronting and exploring our world — ideas, issues, societies and change. Like artists, we interpret the world for others. Unlike artists, we can find ourselves in some pretty amazing and unexpected places if we develop the creative independence to take risks. That’s the key, and it means learning how not to say no to impossible odds.

Tom Bowman, founder of Bowman Design Group and president of Bowman Change, Inc., has helped clients identify opportunities and engage people with crucial messages. A social entrepreneur from the get go, he combines his academic training in social ethics with 25 years of business ownership, marketing communications and informal science education. His clients include Fortune 1000 corporations, start-ups, government agencies, science museums and aquariums. He has provided counsel and creative services on international air and trade fairs, the FIFA World Cup, energy education centers and much more.

Tom is an award-winning leader on sustainability and one of the premier interpreters of our changing world. He is author of the critically acclaimed The Green Edge, writes a monthly “Ask Mr. Green” column for Exhibitor Online, and chairs the EDPA’s Sustainable Exhibit Leadership Committee. Bowman Design Group is the first marketing communications firm certified under the APEX/ASTM Sustainable Meeting Standards and the first U.S. design firm to receive Sustainable Company certification under the German FAMAB guidelines. He has appeared on Marketplace, the New York Times, Yale Environment 360 and many other leading news outlets.
